What Is Beast of Reincarnation? Gameplay Systems Explained
Beast of Reincarnation is Game Freak's first big original game outside Pokémon: an action RPG set in Japan in the year 4026, following Emma — a Sealer — and her dog Koo through a land ruined by a corruption called the Blight.

The combat fusion
The headline system is a blend of real-time action and turn-based command. You fight as Emma in real time — katana attacks, dodges, and a parry that the previews centre on — and you can open a command layer to direct Koo, which slows the action while you choose.
That means two resource loops running at once: your own positioning and parry timing, and Koo's command economy. Previews describe successful parries as feeding into what you can spend on Koo's abilities, which is why coverage keeps calling parrying the skill that gates everything else.
What we are not going to pretend to know yet
Exact parry windows, ability costs, skill tree layouts, boss phase counts and item stats are not verifiable before release. Pages elsewhere have published numbers for these; they are estimates from preview footage. We would rather leave the gap and fill it with measured values after August 4.
Emma and Koo
Emma is the player character — sword-and-bow melee with the parry-driven defence described above. Koo is a companion rather than a second controllable character: previews show a command menu for directing the dog's actions, with the game slowing down while it is open.
Game Freak's own framing for the game is "one-person, one-dog action RPG", which is a fair description of how the two layers interlock rather than marketing flourish.
The world
The setting is Japan, 4026 — thousands of years after a collapse, with the landscape overtaken by the Blight. Coverage references corrupted creatures and major encounters that gate progress. The story is reported at around 40 hours.
Difficulty and accessibility
The Steam listing confirms adjustable difficulty, full controller support, subtitle options and custom volume controls. For a parry-centred game, having difficulty options in the box matters — it means the parry timing is not the only way through.

Gameplay FAQ
Is Beast of Reincarnation a soulslike?
It has drawn soulslike comparisons in preview coverage because of its parry-centred defence and boss-driven structure, but Game Freak describes it as an action RPG that fuses real-time and turn-based combat. The turn-based layer — pausing to issue commands to Koo — is not something soulslikes do.
Is it a Pokémon game?
No. It is Game Freak's first large-scale original title outside Pokémon. Same studio, unrelated series, and it is published by Fictions rather than The Pokémon Company or Nintendo.
How long is it?
Roughly 40 hours for the main story, per pre-release coverage. We will replace that with a measured figure after launch.
Is it single-player only?
Yes. The Steam listing marks it single-player, with full controller support and adjustable difficulty.
Can you play as the dog?
You control Emma directly. Koo is commanded rather than directly controlled — that command layer is the core of the combat system.
